Interested in Applying to TEMS?

Tulane EMS is a student-run emergency medical service which provides care to the students, faculty, staff, and visitors of the Tulane uptown campus community free of charge. Tulane EMS at any given time consists of between thirty and thirty five undergraduate and graduate students. Each semester, we make available 4-8 slots for applicants who show promise as leaders and competent Emergency Medical Technicians. No previous medical experience is needed to apply. However, there are two requirements applicants must meet: he or she must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 and must be able to commit four semesters of service to the organization. Applicants who have completed their Sophomore year should be prepared to explain how they plan to fulfill this commitment.

New members who are not already EMT certified are required to spend the first semester after admission attending an EMT course which meets 2-3 times per week in the evenings. In addition, new members are expected to be available for at least two 12-hour shifts per week and for training and meetings every Sunday. As part of the two-year agreement, Tulane EMS will provide the funds for the EMT - Basic course, a uniform allowance, and funding toward further EMS training. Throughout membership you are also likely to spend time working with the Paramedics of the New Orleans Health Department EMS.

The application process involves an informal Question/Answer session with a few current members, and then a formal interview on the following Saturday. A second round call-back interview may be required for the afternoon on Sunday. Many applicants are drawn to Tulane EMS because it offers them an early introduction to medicine, therefore a large proportion of the applicants are pre-med undergraduates at Tulane. Of the actual membership only about half started out pre-med, and fewer still finish that way. People are drawn to Tulane EMS from backgrounds such as outdoor leadership, lifeguarding, previous EMS experience, and sometimes simply the desire to volunteer and help people.
