History

Since the fall of 1981, when the organization was founded, Tulane Emergency Medical Service has provided emergency medical care to the members of the Tulane community. The service first began operating when a few students trained as Emergency Medical Technicians began responding to campus medical emergencies in a converted Ford van.

In 1985, TEMS bought an ambulance and since then has provided on-the-scene care and emergency transportation to Tulane students, as well as staff members, both on campus and in the Uptown area. On May 6, 1994 TEMS replaced that ambulance. In 1999 Tulane EMS finally aquired a second ambulance, unit 40, giving the organization a guaranteed back-up and the capability to run standby operations for Tulane University events. The organization has grown to over thirty members and must maintain a stringent application review process to keep membership at a functional level.

Because Tulane Emergency Medical Service is based on Tulane's campus, they can respond immediately. When you call TEMS, your request for help will be answered in an average time of three and a half minutes. TEMS offers emergency transport to almost all New Orleans area hospitals.
